Please follow the steps carefully and you should come out with a beautiful layout! You can use any blend that you want, but I'm going to one from my latest layout.
What Is A Layout?
A layout is the image base that you see the content rest on at many websites. The layout on this website consists of everything happening behind the words, including the blend at the top and the tables where the content is. I call the area you are looking in right now the Content Area, which is basically just the column running down the page where I put the content. Layouts may seem hard but trust me, once you get the hang of them you will be making them constantly and you will get better and better.
How To Use This Tutorial
Please read through the full tutorial to get the desired effect. Click on the numbers to view the example. This makes it much neater than putting the image underneath in a link or thumbnail. Not all numbers are links.
The Tutorial
1. Take the blend you have created and make a new canvas (File > New). I usually like to extend 50 extra pixels past the actual dimensions of the blend. For example, this banner was 650x300 pixels. For the new canvas, I made the dimensions 700x350. Once you have made the new canvas, paste the blend onto it.
2. Create a new layer and drag it under the the layer where you pasted your blend. This will be your main background, fill it with a color of your choice (that suits the blend of course).
3. Now, create a new layer on top of this background layer (still underneath the blend layer). Use the selection tool to select the area behind the blend and underneath the blend (see example for futher detail). This will be the background color of your content area, so fill it in with something you think would work. I usually try picking a color that appears a lot near the bottom of the blend as it will fade easier.
4. Now select the blend layer again. It is time to fade the header into the layout. Using the history brush tool at an opacity of 100% and a brush size of 100 (fuzzy/fade brush), you will carefully erase the bottom of the blend layer so that it fades into the layout. If you mess up, undo it and try again. You will get the hang of it after a couple of tries.
5. With the blend layer still selected, you are going to go to File > Merge Down. Please, make sure the content area layer is directly underneath the blend layer.
6. Once you have the blend and content area layers merged, you will go to Layer > Layer Style > Stroke. Choose your settings to please yourself.
Making The Background
Before you are finished, you have to create a background to put into the stylesheet so that the image of content area will continue down the page.
1. Go to Layer > Merge Visible. This will lock the entire image so it is all one. Take out the Selection Tool again, and select a small portion from left to right near the bottom of the header you have created.
2. Now create a new canvas (File > New) with proportions:
3. Zoom in to 100% and use the left-right scroll, located at the bottom of Photoshop, to go as far as you can to the left. Now paste your image, and is should be in the center.
Create a new layer, drag it under the layer you just pasted, and fill it in with the background color.
Final Product
The final product is located here. I did some alterations myself, which you can figure out how to do on your own.
Hopefully, this tutorial helped you. If you have any questions or would like to share your layout, please email or IM me and I'll be happy to reply.
